Restoration is one of the really fun aspects of the world of straight razor shaving. Don and I have restored razors for years and enjoy taking a tarnished and rusty razor from looking like it is ready to be scrapped to a razor that is a pleasure to shave with. We are pretty fanatical about producing a mirror finish on our blades where you are able to see and count your eyebrows. People always ask us what products we use on the buffer to be able to produce the mirror finishes we obtain. So, we thought we would make the buffing compounds that we use available to you.
We have tried many Buffing Compounds and found that the Matchless Buffing Compounds produce the finest finishes on our razors from everything else we have tried. We use them on sewn cotton wheels and loose cotton wheels for the best results.
Our normal routine with these compounds is to use them after greaseless compounds and sandpaper starting with the Grey or Black bar and then going to Green and White, followed by White Rouge.
With a slow speed buffer, the white and white rouge also work very well in cleaning up most scales.
Remember that you only need to touch the bar to the moving wheels for approximately a second when using these compounds. You do not want to over load the wheel with compound. Remember that SAFETY COMES FIRST when using a buffer or any shop machine and we recommend that you study some of the excellent tutorials available on the internet before attempting to use a buffer. You should also clean your wheels regularly utilizing a wheel rake.
It is also important to remember that if you start with a heavily rusted blade that has severe wear on the spine, you will end up with a shiny razor that has a flattened spine and pitting which in some cases will produce a much better end result than what you started with, but not an entirely new looking razor.
As with all the products we offer, we are available to assist you with any questions and look forward to hearing from you.
